How to Use Salt to Maximize Performance

Many people believe salt is bad for us and causes hypertension. But recent studies in the past few years proved that this is not the case.

Our bodies need salt to function. Our neurons actually communicate through sodium. You might recall the 'action potential' graphs from high-school biology class.

So, if you're not getting enough salt, your neurons don't work properly. Salt also affects things like kidney function, cravings, blood volume. But now we'll just focus on what you feel directly; Energy and mental clarity.

Let's use a story that Andrew shared on the podcast once:

"I had the experience of feeling kind of shaky and I thought I had blood sugar issues. I went and got my blood sugar checked and it was fine. And a physician said I should up my salt intake. I quickly found, was that if I consumed enough salt, usually I would do this in the form of putting a little pinch of salt into some water. That I lost any kind of shakiness in my hands, that my mental functioning was better, my sports performance was better, et cetera."

That's it. A bit of extra salt in your water. Any kind is fine, Himalayan, sea, or table salt. You can add lemon or lime juice for it to taste better but it's not necessary. I personally like the salt taste.

It doesn't mean you need to start drinking gallons of salt. Don't overthink the quantity, quality, timing, whatever. And of course, take precaution if you already have high blood pressure or chronic hypertension.

For simplicity, just add a pinch of salt to your water.
