Tell Someone You're Grateful For Them
the impact of receiving gratitude or observing gratitude is far more potent. Bigger increases in happiness and feelings of well-being and indeed neurochemicals and activation of brain areas associated with happiness and well-being when there's a reciprocity.
i.e. when the person receiving understands something about the person that's giving to them and understands that they’re giving genuinely. Likewise for the giver; that they understand the receiver appreciates it.
“List 3 things you’re grateful for” is mostly useless. The scientific literature studied gratitude and its effects on the brain. And they found that:
Receiving gratitude is the best way to feel happier
It needs to be honest, practical, and genuine
The giver should see the heartwarming reaction of the receiver and understand why it means so much to them
think of someone who deserves your gratitude. Maybe they’re always there for you. Or they went out of their way to help you. Or it’s someone who’s feeling down.
Imagine how they’ll feel when you express your thanks.
Like: “Hey, you always cheer me up” or “Thanks for helping me with that task, you didn’t have to” or “thanks for dealing with me growing up for 18 years :)” or just give them a hug.
This practice increases happiness. And you should do it once or twice a week. Just like there are guidelines and checkups for fitness and nutrition, why not for mental health?
So , if you care about your well-being and others’, choose someone you will express your gratitude to today.
Think of someone here… (like actually think for 10 seconds)
Great! Now make the effort to appreciate them today.
Good job!
