Have a sense of control

Mental Health Action #2

Reminder about yesterday: Message someone

The factors that tell us is this person enjoying life and whether they’re engaged productively in the world is… agency and gratitude. If we have those two things, you almost never see someone go wrong

Dr. Paul Conti - Harvard, Stanford, M.D.

When you have agency, you make your own decisions. You feel empowered enough to make a difference in your life. If you’re helpless, you will be sad.

That’s oversimplifying it. But it does make sense.

Think of one of your sucky jobs, one you really hated. You hated it because you just followed orders. You had no control over your time.

This feeling messes up your mental health. And you still have it in some areas. There are things you believe you can’t control. Things like your bad habits, education level, fitness, income, social ties, etc.

When you say “oh, I can’t do anything about this”, you’ll feel stuck and get disempowered.

So Mental Health Improver, you have agency over most things in your life. Your time, your habits, toxic relationships, insecurities, and your dreams.

You can make your own choices.

Right now, you can close your phone and change everything about your life. I’m not saying you should, but I’m saying you can.

And knowing you can, makes you feel empowered and makes your mental health 10 times better.

So live life how you want to live it. I swear my cat sleeps and jumps however the hell he wants. He’s happier than most people I know :) !

Alright, keep reminding yourself today. Kind of like a mantra.

You can decide how you want to live your life. You have agency. You have control.
