How To Enhance Breathing And Jaw Structure For Better Heallth

Huberman recommended the book ‘Jaws: The Story of a Hidden Epidemic’. It talks about the importance of jaw/tongue posture and good breathing.

If you from an early age develop the habits of perpetually mouth breathing, eating mostly soft foods that require little chewing, and sleeping restlessly, snoring and squirming through every night, that could lead to distorted development of your jaws, face, and airway (the passage through which air enters and leaves the lungs) and to serious health problems later on—even to an early death.

Jaws: A Hidden Epidemic

Hubermanner, if you suffer from this, or want to avoid it, you can start to shift in the right direction with a few posture/breathing changes.

Your body needs a molecule called nitric oxide. It eases the transfer of nutrients to all areas of your body. But you can only get NO when oxygen smoothly passes through your nose. So this tool isn’t just for jaw aesthetics, it’s also for better health, longevity, and performance.

Here’s the easiest way to get similar results (and what you will do these 2 days): put your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Right behind your top teeth. This is often called ‘mewing’.

When you train this placement, your teeth palette widens and makes it easier for your tongue to stay in the right place. Especially when you have a text neck, bad breathing, or a poorly defined jaw.

So go ahead, straighten your neck, seal your mouth, force your tongue to the top of your mouth, and take a deep breath.

tip from Atomic Habits: do this every time you walk through a doorframe. It makes sure you remember it.

p.s. Hubermanner I worry that we’ll read these tips and forget them in 1 month. Then we don’t really get the results like those in the picture. And I’m just wondering, how can we make sure that these lessons stay in our heads a week, month, or year from now?
