Morning Sunlight ☀️ in The Winter ☁️?

How to get sunlight in the winter

On cloudy days, you especially need to get outside. I repeat, on cloudy, overcast, rainy days, you especially need to get outside and get sunlight.

Huberman Lab | Episode #84

Hey , how will you get the morning sunlight when the winter hits hard next month? It’s actually easier than you think.

When there’s a lot of clouds outside, you think there’s no sunlight. But that’s not true. Photons are tiny packets of light energy. When the sun is out, there’s a lot so it’s very bright.

But even on a grey, rainy/cloudy afternoon, how come you can still see what’s going on if there’s no light? That’s because there is light. Gotcha! :)

You just need more time outside to get the activation needed for your circadian rhythm to work properly.

How morning sunlight works: Imagine your body is like a bustling city, and inside there are lots of little workers waiting to know when to start their day. Your eyes are like the city’s big windows, and when the morning sunlight peeks in, it's like the city's morning bell. The light tells your brain, "It's morning time!" and the brain is like the mayor who then tells all the little workers in your body-city to wake up, open shops, clean the streets, and start working.

So let’s make it a habit.

Hubermanner, envision your typical morning. Meaning the first 2 hours of your day.

You get up, you brush your teeth, you prepare breakfast, you go back to bed, spend some time on your phone, you get dressed, commute, etc.

  • From your typical morning, what can you start doing outside or next to an open window to get the sunlight? think about it

For example, say you’ll have your breakfast outside. Or you stop your phone scroll and go outside for a bit. Or you have your coffee next to a window

My answer: I’ll start writing you these emails while sitting outside. And for you.

When can you start getting the sunlight?

When you know that, you’ll be on your way to taking care of your circadian rhythm even when there’s barely any sun out.

So think about your morning and see how you’ll do it.

Oh and, if it’s the morning now, go do it. Just take your phone or laptop and go outside. Don’t tell me it’s cloudy :p
