The Mind-Muscle Connection

Fitness Tip #8

Mind-Muscle Connection

“A handful of very recent studies have looked at what we'll call the mind-muscle connection.

And this is when you do things like a bicep curl, and you're simply looking at and watching your biceps, and you're thinking about contracting it harder. Even though you execute the same repetitions at the same exact intensity, initial indications are the mind-body connection is going to result in more growth than not.” - Andy Galpin

Starting this week with a bang. Looking at a muscle and seeing it contract during a movement, like a pushup or squat, increases the rate of growth of the muscle fibers.

So imagine you’re trying to move a weight. Let’s say in a bench press. And you move the bar at a certain speed. In one situation, you’re just moving it. In the other one, you intend to move it faster but still can’t. The second one (where you put more effort but get the same) creates more improvements. Nerves and intent matter.

Your brain’s direct connection to the muscle makes it better for performance. So you should actively engage your muscles by thinking about them. Even between sets, you can look at a mirror and flex a muscle so your brain can see the movement.

Whether it’s weight training, sprinting, or even bodyweight exercise. Think about your muscles. And engage them as strong as you can to get the most out of the exercise.
