How To Increase Joy and Motivation (Get Bored)
To reset the balance, we need to enter into states in which we are not in pursuit of pleasure. To literally enter states in which we are bored.
And that resets the pleasure-pain balance so that we can return to our pursuit in a healthy way.
Yesterday you learned about why you should have periods of doing nothing. You learned that constant stimuli drain your ‘neural energy’. I really want to nail this tool down before moving to other ones.
Anna Lembke, the motivation expert, said that to function as a human being, you need a balance of pleasure and pain. But with our constantly stimulating world of needing more-more-more, you became so fixated on pursuit. So you never get back to the balance you need.
This puts you in a constant point of craving. And nothing can satisfy you anymore.
So, you need to get over the pain of wanting more. You know this problem. You’re sitting there bored and you feel you have to check if you got any notifications or see live sports scores.
But ideally, you should sit in the pain of non-stimulation. It lets your dopamine get back to baseline instead of overwhelming it. And hence, be able to continue doing things you enjoy.
If you want to be able to focus, maintain your motivation for days, or be a better performer, this action is for you.
Action for the day
Get bored. You’re the only thing that can re-energize and motivate to keep working on things you enjoy.
Skip the stimuli. Let your dopamine re-increase. You can do yoga, make a meal, pet a cat, tidy your room, or get some sun in the meantime.
So , try to get bored today. You’ll set yourself up to be happier and more motivated later.
Good job !
