How to end a workout
Fitness Tip #5 Always end with a win“Our minds process memories such that when we reflect back on how much we enjoyed an experience we don't give equal weight to every moment. We give more weight to the end.“ | ![]() |
Hubermanner, how do you feel before a hard workout? Are you excited or uhh not so much?
Well, with this tool, you can choose how you feel and never skip the health boost.
They did experiments where people had unpleasant experiences. Like getting a needle hit at the hospital. But they made a tiny change to the experiment. They made the ending less painful.
Here’s what they found: Even though people felt harsh pain in the middle of the procedure, they recalled the whole experience with the milder pain at the end.
The bad experience was memorized as a good one because of how you felt at the end.
Use this to dread the small stuff less and look forward to consistent workouts. Just like Bob here.

Here’s Bob. Bob hates overhead shoulder raises, pullups, and bench presses. But he LOVES bicep curls. So he started ending workouts with them. And now he loves working out.
Hubermanner, let’s make sure you stamp this down for your exercise routine before you move to the next email.
Which workout do you hate? Which part of it do you not hate so much?
Take a second to think about it (like, really)
Now start to switch the order of your exercises to end with the one you like the most
3 negative + positive ending = positive perception
Good job!
p.s. On Sunday, we’ll do a quick review and a summary of the latest episode with Lisa Feldman Barrett. You’ll learn about where emotions like anger, sadness, and fear come from and how to deal with them.
I left the best for last because… you know, if this week’s fitness tools sucked, at least you’ll like the ending :)
Enjoy the weekend Hubermanner!
