Day 2 To Improving Focus

Day 2 To Improving Focus

None of us should be expected to just sit down and drop directly into a state of focus. The way that neurochemicals work is we don't just get to flip switches in our brain because we decide to. The warm-up is the ramping up or the increase of epinephrine, adrenaline, dopamine, etc. - AH

To start any focus session, you need to warm up. Think of it like physical exercise. You could jump straight into a workout. But your joints and muscles aren't ready yet. So you can't perform well.

Same for mental work. You're not supposed to be able to turn it on like a switch. Don't force or expect yourself to get into laser-focus fast. Especially if your brain was scattered prior. Instead, warm up to transition into a focused state.

So here's what you need to do.

First, same as yesterday, time one work bout to around 90 minutes. But today, add a short warm up in the beginning. Do something simple. You could review some notes, make coffee, or have a 5-minute chat with a friend/coworker (that doesn't stop talking for 2 hours). Okay maybe not that :)

Anyway, the warm-up increases your adrenaline so you can start your ultradian cycle with enough concentration.

Do a 5-10 minute warm-up at the start of your next 90-minute session.

Great job Reader!
